The music of Hayden Pyle (b. 2000) challenges both performers and listeners to wrestle with their expectations about contemporary soundscapes. From solo piano works to chamber and large ensembles, Hayden seeks to embrace the proverbial "swinging pendulum" of the practices of the past and the visions of the future. While his overlapping background of pure mathematics makes its way into his compositions, his exploration of mathematical abstraction is often juxtaposed with striking clarity and attainable expression in his music.
Hayden's works have been performed by
the Evangel University Chorus (Dr. Kevin Hawkins, Springfield, MO),
the Marshfield High School choral program (Mrs. Juliana Pyle, Marshfield, MO),
the Hillcrest High School choral program (Ms. Debbie Futrell and Mrs. Jessica Bennett, Springfield, MO), and
the Kickapoo High School string program (Mrs. Annie Honeycutt, Springfield, MO).
Hayden is currently working on his M.Music in Composition at Missouri State University as a GA for Music Theory. He holds degrees from Northwest Missouri State University (M.Science in Mathematics) and Evangel University (B.Arts in Music, B.Science in Mathematics). He lives with his wife Juliana in Marshfield, MO, where he accompanies her choral program and works part-time at the Webster County Library. He enjoys playing chess, disc golf, and taking hikes.
One of Hayden's passions is following in the pedagogical footsteps of English composer Gustav Holst.
While many know him as the famous composer of The Planets, he was also considered to be an excellent teacher, primarily to beginner and casual musicians. Hayden finds this very inspiring that Holst, while a genius in his own right, was able to meet people where they were at and push them to their musical best.
Many of Hayden's most proud moments are related to music-making with his peers and his students, a practice that he intends to make a habit throughout his musical career.
